The discussion of college sports and Big 10 Conference expansion has become great fun for those of us who love college football.
It’s become an exciting movie thriller and no one knows for sure where it’s going or what the ending will be. There seems to be something new every day to chew on and think about, so stay tuned to see what’s coming tomorrow.
Whatever happens, conference re-alignment will change college athletics in a huge way. It looks like we are headed for 16 team conferences all over the country: The Big 10, The Pac 10, The SEC, and The Big East. Other mid sized universities will also seek similar conference structures to keep a foot in the door for play off spots at the end of the football season.
It’s looking like a game of musical chairs right now, isn’t it? Everyone is circling the landscape and no one wants to miss getting a seat when the dust settles. Colorado University may be the first school to grab a chair in this shuffle and move from the Big 12 over to the Pac 10.
If that happens (maybe by Friday) you could see five other Big 12 teams also bolt for the Pac 10. The Pac 10 commissioner has indicated a strong interest in making the Pac 10 a sixteen team conference. Hey, were having some fun now!
Lets face it… God loves college athletics (especially football). Can you blame Him? There is a passion that comes with athletics that cannot be matched in any other endeavors. Think about that. Why do grown men and women get so excited about winning a football game or a basketball game or a soccer match? Why does a ninth inning home run to win a baseball game make people jump out of their chairs to celebrate?
People follow a team through highs and lows, through winning and losing, through discouragement and sheer joy. It’s mind numbing what sports does for the average fan.
