Baby Boomer History…

“March Madness” has come and gone for another year. I have to say that I agree with several sportswriters that claim the madness as the greatest sports spectacle of the year for the average sports fan. Does that really surprise anyone?

Duke has now won its 4th national championship in men’s basketball and the Blue Devils have had a great run over the last 20 years or so. But think about this. From 1964 until 1975, the UCLA Bruins won 10 national championships in 12 years (UCLA has 11 mens basketball championships total). It is very difficult to win one national championship in anything… and UCLA won 10 titles in 12 years? For my money, that’s the greatest sports achievement ever. The odds of doing something like that must be several million to one.

Coach John Wooden, obviously, has become a legend for pulling that off. He did it with probably the two greatest players in college
history… Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Bill Walton. Jabbar graduates as a three time All-American and then Walton comes along and does the same thing.

Remember this?…

Tiny Tim and Miss Vicki were married on Johnny Carson’s Tonight
Show in December of 1969. The wedding was the second highest rated TV show of the 60′s trailing only the moon landing. Tim’s real name was Herbert Khaury. To put in mildly, he was an odd duck, but he had a likable quality that almost made you feel sorry for him… almost. It was a strange way to live but he did make a career for himself for at least a few years.

Tiny Tim and Miss Vicki eventually divorced after having one
daughter, Tulip (Jeeesh!). Tim married again in 1984 but soon after divorced. After marrying one more time, Tiny Tim suffered from deteriorating health and actually died on stage at the age of 64.

Let’s hope he’s tip toeing through the tulips in God’s Kingdom.
Rest in peace, Tim.

yelling like the passengers in his car.”
