“Pacific” and “Band of Brothers”… Magnificent Stuff

April 30th, 2010

I am not a big fan of HBO or any other movie channel for the Direct TV I have coming into my home. Too much of what they broadcast is not good viewing. But I will applaud HBO for the series on “Band of Brothers” from a few years back, and now for the current series “Pacific.”

In my mind these two WWII programs, along with the series on “John Adams”, are the finest productions ever put on TV. “Band of Brothers” follows the 101st Airborne from D-Day on through to VE Day. Banding together is what makes things work for our soldiers in the military as unit members keep an eye on each other while in harms way.

You cannot help but develop deep respect for what these guys went through in Europe. For the most part they didn’t complain, they just did what they were supposed to do. Can you imagine being there for the Battle of the Bulge in winter weather with little protection and sitting out in the open while German forces fired shells incessantly?

No one wanted to be a hero but everyone displayed bravery when it was needed. Everyone. And now, in “Pacific,” we are seeing the same thing being displayed on the other side of the globe in the Pacific theater as marines move from island to island trying to root out Japanese soldiers who would fight to the death as Americans moved closer and closer to the island of Japan.

Once again, it’s the troops taking care of each other as they fought side by side that ultimately brought victory in each location. These were our fathers fighting for this nation of ours. Watching “Band of Brothers” and now “Pacific” has given me a new respect for what my Dad, my father-in-law, and their peers went through.

God bless them all.

Laugh-In Ruth Buzzi

Gladys Ormphby (Ruth Buzzi) was a regular skit on Laugh In with Arti Johnson as the dirty old man. Over time, she practically beat him to a pulp. But he just kept coming back. Ah, true love.

Would You Marry Again?…

April 29th, 2010

A dinner conversation that went wrong:

WIFE: “If I died first, would you remarry?”

HUSBAND: “Definitely not!”

WIFE: “Why not – don’t you like being married?”

HUSBAND: “Of course I do.”

WIFE: “Then why wouldn’t you remarry?”

HUSBAND: “Okay, I’d get married again.”

WIFE: “You would? (with a hurtful look on her face).”

HUSBAND: (makes audible groan).

WIFE: “Would you sleep with her in our bed?”

HUSBAND: “Where else would we sleep?”

WIFE: “Would you replace my pictures with hers?”

HUSBAND: “That would seem like the proper thing to do.”

WIFE: “Would she use my golf clubs?”

HUSBAND: “No, she’s left-handed.”

WIFE: – – – (silence) – – –

HUSBAND: “Oh, no!”

“Boomer Authority”… Information and Timely Advice

April 28th, 2010

A fairly new site for Baby Boomers called “Boomer Authority” is now available providing information and timely advice for all of us. I became a member a few months back and now find this site to be one of the best for our generation.
Organizations for Boomers are highlighted and discussed and recommended. “Boomer Authority” has a bookstore suggesting several items of interest for Boomers as well as product descriptions of many things and services aimed at the over 50 crowd.

The site promotes events being sponsored around the country that Boomers can attend. Videos and career information are widely available.

And, as you might suspect, you are encouraged to contact other members and develop friendships across the country. You can share all types of information or just plain gossip with like minded Boomers. The site also promotes a speakers bureau for meetings and conferences or local gatherings that we can all utilize.

This is good stuff. Check it out at Boomer Authority.

Phil’s Follies… Useless Information

April 28th, 2010

Stick these nuggets of great information in your pipe and smoke ’em, baby!

* Male cockatoos can be taught to speak, but females can only chirp and sing… (doesn’t this violate nature some how?).

* Rats cannot vomit… (this is really good to know, huh?).

* Thirteen people a year are killed by vending machines falling on them… (what?).

* The average four-year-old child asks more than 400 questions a day… (why?).
